Urgent Call to Action on the Humanitarian Crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The Africa Humanitarian Organisations Network (AHON Africa) has issued a critical statement addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in North and South Kivu. With ongoing violence between the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and M23 rebels, over 7 million people are currently affected, making it Africa’s largest displacement crisis.
Key Highlights:
✓ Escalating Violence – Attacks have displaced 178,000 people in South Kivu alone in early 2025.
✓ Humanitarian Crisis – 6.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 26 million people facing food insecurity.
✓ Human Rights Violations – Reports of looting, killings, kidnappings, and arbitrary arrests among displaced communities.
✓ Underfunded Response – The 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan is only 42% funded, leaving critical gaps in aid delivery.
✓ Call for International Action – AHON Africa urges the African Union, East African Community, and global partners to take immediate steps to ensure humanitarian assistance, peace efforts, and accountability for human rights violations.
AHON Africa’s Demands:
🔹 Mobilize regional and international support for increased humanitarian aid.
🔹 Strengthen peace and security efforts to protect civilians.
🔹 Hold perpetrators accountable for war crimes and human rights violations.
🔹 Address the root causes of conflict through sustainable peace processes.
🔹 Provide long-term solutions for displaced persons.
📢 Let’s take action now! The world cannot afford to ignore this “forgotten crisis.” Share and spread awareness! #StandWithDRC #HumanitarianCrisis #AHONAfrica
